What you have to know to be compliant
The “EU Radio Equipment Directive” (EU-RED) refers to the DIRECTIVE 2014/53/EU of 16 April 2014.
It covers many radio specific requirements, such as interoperability, interference, efficient use of radio spectrum, etc.,
whereas this winkler technology Insight focuses on helping to understand the Cybersecurity requirements, especially the additional new requirements defined by the COMMISSION IMPLEMENTING DECISION from January 2025 !
All which is defined by EU-RED, the referenced harmonized standards and the additional requirements defined by the Implementing Decision must be met when EU-RED comes into force in August 2025.
Who and which devices are affected?
EU-RED covers a wide range of equipment that emits and/or receives radio waves such as mobile phones, tablets, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, smartwatches, fitness trackers, radios, TV-sets, remote controls, satellite navigation devices, radar equipment, wireless microphones, RFID readers, IoT devices including industrial IoT equipment, industrial controls, audio equipment, gaming consoles, E-readers etc. etc. as long as it emits or receives radio waves for the purpose of communication.
This web-page and the information offered focuses on industrial control and communication equipment, such as
◼ wireless control and communication devices
◼ machine controls using wireless communication
◼ intelligent sensors or actuators using wireless communication
Examples for such type of equipment:
◼ tablets and similar devices used for SCADA / visualization or as an interface to production or warehouse management and control systems…
◼ machine controls where either the hardware and/or the software is your responsibility (as opposed to purchased controls1 from Siemens or Rockwell, for example) – Think of the small control board with Linux that controls the storage machine, the autonomous transport device or the handling device…
◼ sensors which include some kind of intelligence to provide augmented information, like an intelligent weighing scale or an intelligent camera…
◼ actuators with intelligent or adaptable behavior…
…using wireless communication for either its operation or for settings and service functions.
If you offer (or incorporate) such devices, e.g. as part of your product or systems and
a) you are not familiar with EU-RED
or
b) you are not aware of the defined harmonized standards for EU-RED
or
c) you do not know which important additional restrictions the Implementing Decision from January 2025 imposes
and especially if
your industrial control, intelligent sensor, intelligent actor etc. is accessible directly or indirectly via a radio based network, such as WiFi or Bluetooth etc., and it is still using a standard password for either operational or service/settings access
than you should get hold of the
